Wednesday 31st March - bike ***** - Around Felixstowe – hazy and still.

A few of the local windsurfers were interested in checking out the very low tide here in Felixstowe to see old forts and sandbanks. So, with low water around 8 this morning we did not have to get up early today but still left home around 7.45 on our bikes. It was a bit chilly and hazy as we headed down through Langer park and onto the car park at The Manor arriving just before Ian Clarke, to be quickly followed by Chris and Marion Stephens. It was lovely on the seafront in hazy sunshine with the sea like a mirror and to the right you could see a large sandbank showing clearly, in all the years I have been windsurfing here I have never seen it before! Local foiler Andy Mexome hit it the other day and broke his mast so please be aware. We had a great catch up by the beach, a seal even popped up before we carried on along the prom, many of the beach huts have now been moved off the prom to the beach. Round to The Dip with huge areas of shingle banks showing in the River Deben entrance, the boat channel is now very narrow! Reaching Felixstowe Ferry the jetty only just reached the water as a family got told off from the Harbour Master for crabbing which has been banned now for over a year! I can’t resist a walk around the boat yard with lots of reflections to be snapped! Then out onto the very quiet River Deben path to have our breakfast at the water ski jetty with only the sound of calling birds! The jetty has broken from it’s posts and is in danger of being washed away! We had a relaxing time and are so lucky to have this on our doorstep. Carrying on we took the first footpath inland crossing farmland spotting several sky larks and reed buntings coming out on the Falkenham road where we see a pair of buzzards. Taking mostly footpaths back to Trimley, round the back of Felixstowe Academy still in full white and red blossom:) We were out for 3 hours 45 minutes covering over 15 miles and I still had the energy to do my exercises in the back garden.
Tomorrow is looking promising for a windsurfing trip to the River Stour at Bradfield as the temperature starts to drop!
